Derrick Dotson’s story is one of passion and dedication to public service, with over two decades of experience in law enforcement and private security. The tragic police-related deaths of multiple Black Americans in 2020 ignited a fire in Derrick to use his knowledge and expertise to effect change.
As he watched the media coverage of these heartbreaking incidents unfold, Derrick couldn’t help but feel that there was a lack of informed and responsible leadership when addressing the use of force in law enforcement. As a Black man who has experienced firsthand the harsh realities of racial profiling and stop-and-frisk, he brings a unique dual perspective. Not only has he been a law enforcement use-of-force instructor teaching similar skills that have led to the deaths of many Black Americans, including a loved one, but he has also been personally engaged by police in dozens of traffic stops.
This dynamic mix of personal experience and professional expertise makes Derrick’s perspective intriguing and educational. With his finger on the pulse of both law enforcement and the complex impact as a private citizen, he is well-equipped to offer practical ideas and direction for the future of law enforcement and policing.
Derrick’s goal is to help people understand more about policing and the use of force so that interactions with police could be more productive and uneventful by sharing his career knowledge and personal experiences with the public.
Through his tireless work as a public servant, Derrick Dotson advocates for change, fighting to ensure everyone is treated fairly and justly under the law.
