Biography

Derrick Dotson is a former law enforcement professional, private security agent, and best-selling author who is deeply committed to improving the relationship between communities and police. A proud graduate of Norfolk State University, an esteemed Historically Black College and University (HBCU), Derrick brings over two decades of personal and professional experience with law enforcement, having worked across federal, state, and municipal levels. Some of his personal experiences include enduring dozens of police traffic stops, stop and frisk, and the tragic loss of his cousin to a law enforcement-involved shooting.

​As the founder of The Black Sanctuary, Derrick has taken a leadership role in creating an educational and empowerment platform. This platform equips individuals—particularly Black Americans—with the knowledge to navigate police interactions safely and confidently. His best-selling children’s book, “The Police and Me,” educates parents and children on how to engage law enforcement respectfully, fostering mutual understanding and safer communities. 

Derrick also leads several impactful initiatives, including the Law Enforcement Education YouTube series and the Road Wise course, designed to teach young drivers and families how to handle traffic stops and police interactions. His national ambassador campaigns focus on bridging gaps between communities and police by partnering with schools, law enforcement agencies, and community organizations across the U.S. In addition to his work as an educator and advocate, Derrick collaborates with organizations like the Department of Justice to promote knowledge about civil rights. His passion for justice is evident as Derrick is a sought-after speaker and educator who continues to create community partnerships and impactful resources, including courses, video series, and social media content to promote safety and understanding between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

How one dad is teaching kids how to talk to law enforcement

“I started thinking about how I can bring everybody together,” Derrick Dotson tells TODAY.com. “I realized it starts with kids.”

In 2020, Derrick Dotson was sitting at home yelling at his television screen.

“I was bothered — people didn’t know what I know,” Dotson, 46, tells TODAY.com about watching the nation grapple with a racial reckoning after the murder of George Floyd. “If people had access to the knowledge I have on use of force and the law, people would be safer.”
